Bout one- Cruiserweights, Gabriel Aguilar Costa, 201lbs, of Woburn, MA battles Slawomir Bohdziewicz, 201lbs, of Stamford, CT. The shorter fighter, Costa, gets off to a busier start, pressing the action but leaning straight back to avoid Bohdziewicz’s longer straight punches. Bohdziewicz catches him cleanly several times in the final minute of the first.
Costa appears gassed at the start of round two and it’s not long before Bohdziewicz cracks him with a hard right uppercut and thumps him again, dropping him in round two. Costa barely beats the count but referee Harvey Dock has seen enough at 2:40 of the second.
Bohdziewicz improves his record to 2-0 (2) while Costa returns to Massachusetts at 2-5.
Bout two- Welterweights, Joe Wilson Jr , 140.2lbs, of Hartford, CT goes up against Jeffrey Gonzalez, 147.5 lbs, of East Haven, CT, in a scheduled four round bout. Gonzalez controls the first and in the final minute cracks the southpaw Wilson with a straight right to the chin that sits him on the canvas. Wilson rises but Gonzalez tries to finish him and scores a second knockdown right at the bell with a cuffing overhand right. Wilson beats the count and returns to his corner.
Round 2 opens with Gonzalez being very aggressive. Wilson covering up and halfway through the round he lands a couple right jabs. Gonzalez scores a third knockdown in the final seconds of the round with a right uppercut to the ribs that catches Wilson off-balance and puts him on his hands and knees. Wilson has now been down 3 times and will need to score several knockdowns of his own to even things up in this 4 rounder.
In the third Wilson is still making and effort but Gonzalez is able to stun him whenever he lands cleanly. Driving Wilson back into the blue corner, Gonzalez lands a hard overhand right that slumps Wilson. He’s up quickly, before the referee can begin his count but Harvey Dock has seen enough and waves off the bout. The official time is 1:54 of the third.
With the TKO victory, Gonzalez goes to 4-0 (2) while Jabbin’ Joe Wilson falls to 3-6.
Bout 3- Super Lightweights, Stephen Davis, 140.5lbs, of Brockton, MA fights Mike Kimbel, 141.5lbs, of Waterbury, CT in a 4 round bout. The heavier-handed Kimbel takes control quickly, landing hard shots to the body and cracking Davis with a speedy overhand right to the head. Kimbel has a one pound weight advantage but he’s got the shoulders of a middleweight atop on junior welterweight body.
In the second, Kimbel sinks a hard straight right to the ribs of Davis which gets a cheer from the crowd. Davis circling away, mostly in retreat. Davis lands a handful of jabs but the power and speed of Kimbel has him boxing very cautiously through two.
The third round is a big one for Kimbel who lands repeated power punches over the course of the round after an early surge by Davis. At the bell Kimbel is thumping Davis with both hands the Brockton native is able to partially block behind a high guard.
The fourth is by far the most exciting as both men let their hands go in the final minute. Kimbel lands heavier throughout, especially with the right hand, upstairs to the head of Davis and downstairs to his mid-section. A recent convert from MMA, Kimbel hears the final bell for the first time in his boxing career as this one goes the full four rounds.
All three judges score is 40-36 in favor of Mike “The Savage” Kimbel who goes to 3-0 (2) and Stephen Davis picks up his first defeat, now 1-1 (1).
Bout 4- Middleweights, Anthony Velazquez, 162lbs, of Springfield, MA made quick work of Mario Bustos, 172lbs, of Tucumon, Argentina, stopping him at 1:48 of the first after dropping him twice with mean, speedy left hooks to the body. The second knockdown saw Bustos rolling around in agony when Ref. Johnny Callas called a halt to the bout.
Velazquez is now 13-0-1 (12) while Mario Bustos drops to double-digit losses, now 7-10 (3).
Bout 5- Super lightweights, Wilson Mascarenas, 142lbs of New Bedford, MA goes up against Anthony Mora, 138lbs, of New Britain, CT in a scheduled 6 rounder. Round one starts fast with both men looking to score with quick jabs. Mora is first to connect with power shots–first an overhand right followed by a solid left hook. Mascarenas lands a clean left hook of his own but the bulk of the first round belonged to the busier Mora.
Mascarenas gets the attention of Mora with a big uppercut in close and stuns him several times with big shots. Referee Johnny Callas stays close to the action but Mora weathers the punishment, never goes down and makes it back to his corner on unsteady legs.
The ringside doctor takes a close look at Mora before the start of round three and allows the bout to continue. Mascarenas senses a knockout and pours on the pressure. Mora isn’t done yet and lands two chopping rights of his own as Mascarenas comes forward. Both boxers have cheering sections in attendance and they loudly root on their respective favorites from different parts of the arena. The round ends with mascarenas landing heavily again after heated action.
The ringside physician advises referee Johnny Callas that Mora has seen enough at the start of round four and this one ends on a TKO for Macarenas. The New Bedford fighter is now 2-0 since his return to boxing after being stabbed in a night club melee in March of 2022.
Wilson Mascarenas improves to 8-1 (3) while Anthony Mora falls to 2-1 (1).
Bout 5- Lightweights, Alejandro Paulino, 131.5lbs, of New London, CT battles Julian Aristule, 135lbs, of Buenos Aires, Argentina in a scheduled 6 round contest. Paulino starts quickly and scores a knockdown with a left hook. He’s swarming Aristule and puts him down a second time in the Argentine’s own corner. Referee Harvey Dock waves the count off about halfway through giving Paulino a first round TKO victory.
The official time was 1:54 of round number one and Paulino is now 15-0 (13). Aristule makes the long trek back to Buenos Aires, now 35-18-1 (18).
Bout 7–female super lightweights; The co-featured attraction pits Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt, 131lbs, of Warwick, RI against Josefina Vega, 132.5lbs, of Quito, Ecuador. Clampitt starts aggressively and scores big with speedy overhand rights on her shorter opponent. Busy first round for the 47 year old Clampitt, landing repeatedly on the tenacious Vega.
Clampitt starts the second behind quick double jabs, and a stinging straight right. The Rhode Island Hall-of-Famer is in complete control through two.
Clampitt is layering her punches in the third, double-jab, right hand, left hook straight right. Vega retreats, breathing heavily behind a big orange mouthpiece, waving Clampitt on. She looks to be out of options and is relying on toughness.
Vega connects with a jab to Clampitt’s chin in the 4th but she’s doing a lot more catching than pitching. Clampitt’s in great shape and has set a very intense pace.
Vega hanging in there and actually seems to be doing better now. She’s not winning these rounds at all but she’s scoring sporadically and absorbing lots of shots to the head and body. Clampitt is more of a volume puncher and she’s outworking Vega 4 and 5 punches to one.
Round seven is more of the same with Clampitt boring in behind a jab and pressing the action. Vega lands short right hand bolts to Clampitt’s chin but they haven’t come close to blunting her attack.
Josefina Vega slugs with Clampitt in the first minute of the eighth and final round. Clampitt closes the show behind a stinging left hook and multiple clean right hands to the head and torso of Vega. This one goes the distance and it’s likely the scores will be all Clampitt.
When the scorecards are announced 78-74 and 80-72 x 2 all in favor of Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt.
Clampitt continues her Hall-of-Fame career, now 25-6-2 (7) and Josefina Vega drops to 9-6 (4).
Bout 8- Junior Middleweight Co-feature, Chordale Booker, 153lbs, of Stamford, CT, meets Nicolas Hernandez, 154lbs, of Reading PA, in a 10 round contest. The southpaw Booker stalks Hernandez at the start of the 1st, touching him with the right jab. Hernandez, also a southpaw, fires back but his punches fall short save for a right-left to the belly of Booker. Not a lot landed in round one but Booker looks to have gotten the better of it.
Booker lands speedy, jolting shots which draw a smile in response from Hernandez at the start of the second. Quick right hook scores for Booker and Hernandez paws at him with his own short straight left. Booker looking very confident, scoring with quick jabs and a big bolting left behind it.
They slug in close in round three and Booker lands heavily with the left, again, again and again. Hernandez is durable but he’d be ill-advised to keep taking clean shots like he did in the third.
Booker looks very sharp tonight. Hernandez lands and Booker counters with a heavy left. He cranks right hooks around Hernandez left hand, banging against his ear and jaw. Booker uses a textbook shoulder-roll counter left that sprays sweat off the head of Hernandez. The doctor goes up the steps to the corner of Hernandez after that fourth. He absorbed a lot of punishment. To his credit he showed no signs of being hurt but the ringside physcian is going to take a look at him. She holds up an index finger for him to track, talks with him and lets it continue.
Booker is in close now, looking for the big shot. He has a chance to do this lovely and he’s being patient. Hernandez might not be totally spent however as he survives the fifth. Did Booker let him off the hook?
Booker is boxing again to start round six. He’s jabbing well and catches Hernandez with a short right hook as he steps in. Hernandez has gotten busier since the doctor visited his corner. Booker looked close to scoring a stoppage but the sixth round looks like a fight.
Hernandez is tough but Booker is definitely doing damage in this seventh round. After a hard exchange of blows, Hernandez’ knees finally look a bit spongy but he waves Booker on. Booker obliges and opens up with power shots, he cracks Hernandez with a stright left and the Pennsylvanian staggers back into the ropes and to the canvas. Ref. Johnny Callas lets the bout continue and Booker crosses the ring and smashes Hernandez with a big right hook that puts him flat on his back.
The official time of the knockout was 2:41 of round number 7. Chordale Booker improves to 20-1 (9) and Nicolas Hernandez drops to 27-7-3 (12).
Junior Middleweight Tony Harrison is at ringside and afterwards Booker calls him into the ring to thank him for the support and inspiration. Booker hopes for bigger bouts to come with the likes of Fundora, Charlo and all the top guys at 154 pounds.
